Database
Productivity, Development & Support Issues
A
one-day, free seminar in London on Thursday, 9th September 2004 (by
invitation only)
Colin Oakhill, Insoft Software (9.45 a.m. - 11.15
a.m.)
"Quality Assurance for DB2 z/OS"
Colin founded InSoft Software GmbH in Germany, which has been a
successful mainframe supplier of application and systems software for CICS and DB2 for the
past eighteen years. Today, InSoft has more than three hundred licences with its
home-grown products. Colin started his IT career in real-time military systems and after
moving to Germany, entered the mainframe world of commercial IT. He has been involved with
almost all major database systems from design & programming to systems "trouble
shooting". He has almost thirty years experience in the Information Technology field
and has spoken regularly at guides and technical conferences.
Colin will discuss all aspects of Quality Assurance for DB2 z/OS,
ranging from the systematic process of establishing enterprise-wide SQL standards to
reducing the risk of complex SQL and recognising "time-bombs". He will introduce
proactive solutions designed to prevent problems as opposed to solving problems and
continuously monitor the effectiveness. Colin will show how the objectives of successful
Quality Assurance resulted in InSofts DB/IQ. The presentation will include some
instructive examples on common issues and their resolution, as well as sample client
issues.
Manfred Hainer, UBS Hainer GmbH (11.15 a.m.
- 12.30 p.m.)
"DB2 & IMS System Clones under z/OS"
Manfred qualified from Berlin University in 1976
in Mathematics and started immediately into MVS systems programming and development for
DFL (German Aerospace). When UCCel wanted people for their European operations he was one
of the first account managers recruited and spearheaded the automated operations products
(e.g. Tape Mgmt. & Scheduling). After the CA merger he set up and worked for 3 years
as head of the CA Systems Consulting Division. In 1990 he founded UBS Hainer which
specialises in development and distribution of conversion software and MVS contingency
software. UBS Hainer has been involved in the implementation of large projects in Germany,
Benelux and North America.
Manfred will present some of the practical experience and methodologies
and learning adopted by a variety of clients in their quest for accessing up-to-date
copies of enormous databases. He will be discussing the methods employed in making DB2 and
IMS system clones, rapid DB2 database copies and DB2 table copies. Business demands
automatic job generation for efficient copying with less elapsed time and less CPU
time/overhead leading to copies in minutes rather than hours/days.
* Lunch 12.30 to 1.15 p.m. A complimentary
light lunch will be served.
Colin Oakhill, Insoft Software (1.15 p.m. -
2.30 p.m.)
"Measuring Index Impact for DB2 z/OS"
One of the most important factors in DB2 application performance is the
index design. Poor index usage can ruin the application's performance. Deciding which
columns need indexing, and the order of concatenated keys, is a difficult task for the
DBA. Often it is pure guesswork, based on assumptions and the presence of certain columns
in SQL. Colin in his presentation will highlight the answer two vital questions - which
columns should be indexed to satisfy the majority of DB2 applications and what is the
impact of new indexes across all applications affected. The presentation will include an
instructive common example.
Fiona Dunne, Fitz Software & Co. (2.30
p.m. - 3.00 p.m.)
"Fitz in the System More Options"
Fiona joined Fitz Software in 2000, having previously worked in the IT
Service Delivery Section of a large banking institution. There she worked with both IT
personnel and demanding end-users. This gave her a valued insight into determining and
understanding client requirements and jointly working on individual solutions.
This will be a short introduction on what's currently available in the
Fitz Software portfolio of products covering areas in particular in DB productivity,
system availability & change management, IT asset management, and application
life-cycle software. Fiona will also be giving you some indicators of what we will be
introducing to the market in the next 6 months. This includes some highly competitive
products that can replace some of those very expensive products you may still have
installed today!
* Open-Session 3.00 to 3.30 p.m. Any
questions to any of the speakers
